February 22, 2019- Nolan Ryan Jr. High and The Pearl Theater presents The 2019 Youth@Play Festival Round III and Showcase. Come and be a part of the process as the 10 semi finalist playwrights at NRJH compete to be chosen as the top 5 who will be showcased at the Pearl Theater later in March. Over the course of two days, we will see 10 readings of different styles and interesting kinds of plays all written by NRJH students.
Youth @ Play Festival has been in development by NRJH Longhorn Theatre Department over the past two years. This year, 30 students wrote 5 minute plays. ELA teachers and students judged the plays and chose the top 15 to advance to Round II- Stage Reading Semi-Finals. The stage reading of the top 15 playwrights were judged by the school’s administration team who chose the top 10 to advance to the Round III- The Finals. The ten finalist to advance are: Poor Dog by Lailah King, How It Ends by Ke’Onia Adams -Beckwith, Javier by Jonathan Marquez, It’s Not Fine by Chiamaka Dike, On My Shoulders by Mariam Aroud, The Heist by Ethan Wiltz, The Other Side by Kelsea Dorsey, Promise by Damian Rasco, No One Except the Thoughts by Akina-Sophia Damanik, The Nobody on Arcadia Lane by Malak Ettahali.
“We are delighted to be part of such a wonderful cross-curricular learning activity with the Nolan Ryan Longhorn Theatre.” states Artistic Director of the Pearl Theater, Renee Van Nifterik. “ Mrs. Sykes-Assadi and I collaborated previously on this project and it was a huge success for the student writers. We knew we wanted to do something bigger and better this year. So, instead of having a staged reading, We are offering the winning playwrights the chance to have their plays fully produced and performed at the Pearl Theater. Our goal is to create a real world avenue to support and encourage writing.”
The finalist now have the task of expanding their 5 minute plays to become 10 minute plays that will be directed and performed by fellow students. On March 1st and 2nd at 6pm, you will have the opportunity to hear these plays fresh off the press and do your part by giving the students valuable feedback on his or her work. The event is free. You may reserve tickets on the NRJH Longhorn Theatre Website. These performances will also be judged by two theatre professionals in the theatre industry and a theatre teacher for academic purposes. These judges have the task of naming 5 playwrights the Winners of the 2019 Youth @ Play Festival and earn the opportunity to have their plays produced at the Pearl Theater on March 30th @ 6pm. Reservations for the 2019 Youth @ Play Festival Winners Showcase at the Pearl Theater will be available starting March 11, 2019 on the Pearl Theater website.
